Burke County - A great place to live! Burke County, located in the east-central part of Georgia is boarded to the north by South Carolina. The second largest county in Georgia is bordered on the northeast by the Savannah River, on the southwest by the Ogeechee River and Brier Creek draws a line down the middle.

The renovated courthouse, on the corner of Liberty and 6th Streets in downtown, is home for many historical markers which tell the story of Burke County and Waynesboro.

Waynesboro, the county's seat and geographic center is approximately 25 miles south of Augusta Interstate 520 and 101 miles north of Savannah. You can take a two to two and a half hour drive and find yourself in Atlanta, Columbia or Charleston, SC. Visit the mountains by North and sunny beaches by South.

Established in 1777, Burke County is one of Georgia's eight original counties and one of the largest, covering 534,507 acres. About 22,000 people reside here with 6,000 living in Waynesboro, the county seat. Waynesboro is known as "The Bird Dog Captial of the World" because of its heritage in producing champion bird dogs for quail hunting. The large acreage of valuable wildlife habitat includes many rivers, creeks and ponds which make Burke County a sportsman's paradise.

Situated in the east central portion of Georgia gives Burke County the advantage of moderate winters and long summers. The average temperature is 64.3 degrees. With temperatures like this you can expect to find lots of things to do in the outdoors. Burke County is an outdoor lover's paradise. But you will find that hunting and fishing compete with boating, water skiing, tennis, team sports and golf among others, just about all year round.

Burke County has two unique wildlife management area's, Di-Lane Plantation WMA and Yuchi WMA. Di-Lane is located 10 miles south of Waynesboro and Yuchi is on the eastern border of the county, adjacent to the Savannah River.

In addition you'll find privately owned hunting preserves among which Boll Weevil Plantation is one of the largest.

INDUSTRY
You will find a varied community of industry within the borders of our county. Fertilizer, steel works, timber, textiles, heaters, and locks .... among others. Farming continues to support our families as do Pecan groves and Strawberry patches. The Burke County Industrial Development Authority is a full time service that actively recruites new businesses to the area. With an unemployment figure of 6.4% Burke County enjoys a prosperity that is enviable.

EDUCATION
Education is a primary concern for Burke Countians which accounts for the active recruitment of a full time campus for adult education, The Augusta Area Technical School Waynesboro Branch which opened in 2000.
In addition to a public comprehensive high school which serves the entire county, Burke County is home to state of the art elementary and middle schools.
Private education is represented by Edmund Burke Academy which has been in operation continuously since 1971.
Burkehaven Christian School is available to children in grades K-4 through 6.

CULTURE
Culture is neither forgotten nor ignored. The Burke Council of the Arts and the Community Concert Association support and sponsor numerous events. Social clubs sponsor community events such as the Relay for Life which recently raised over $100,000 for cancer research. Burke Countians believe in life and family and everything they do reflects their love for both.

Sardis Coal Chute
The Eternal Flame, a monument to Burke County's fallen war heroes, burns 24-hours a day in downtown Waynesboro.
Burke County is home to several smaller communities such as Sardis, knows as the 'Friendly Little City', where approximately 1300 residents enjoy the benefits of water, sewer and garbage pickup services. Home to one of our county wide Emergency Management Agency stations Sardis enjoys 24-hour fire protection, ambulance services and emergency medical treatment as well as police protection by the city police department.

Midville, with its abundance of water both above and below ground is located in southwest Burke County on the banks of the Ogeechee River and sponsors a yearly celebration, the Ogeechee River Redbrest Festival, where fun and food are the name of the game. The festival celebrates a love for the Ogeechee River's unique variety of redbreasted bream, and draws thousands to the community. Activities may include a fishing rodeo, 10k run, fun run, parade, fish fry, canoe race, free vareity entertainment, and a beach blast at the end of the day. Midville, too, offers, water, sewer and garbage pickup as well as fire and police protection. The town of Midville sits atop one of the state's largest aquifers, boasts two active and 20 capped artisian wells.

Keysville faces Jefferson County on the north side of Brier Creek and is just five miles south of Richmond County which places it approximately 15 miles from Fort Gordon, a U.S. Army base, and 20 miles from both Augusta and Waynesboro.

Other communities include Alexander, Girard, Gough and Vidette where some city services are available. In between you will find thousands of acres of countryside available if you prefer the truly rural life.
